Mechanical Systems Consulting

Bfreehomes offers Mechanical Systems Consulting for homeowners who wish to ensure that they buy the right product. We are familiar with a wide range of mechanical system equipment, including high efficiency boilers and furnaces, solar thermal, heat pumps, PV and drainwater heat recovery.

A key aspect of Bfreehomes consulting is to review your house as a system so products address the overall energy reduction needs of your house. As well, we are able to pre-plan for future systems such as solar thermal, PV and micro-cogeneration.

Here is one example of the benefits of addressing your house as a system from our research with Canadian Housing and Mortgage Corporation. Take a typical two storey house (full basement) with some insulation in the ceiling and the main walls but no insulation in the basement walls. The energy costs could be reduced by nearly one-third by adding RSI 2.1 (R20) closed cell spray foam insulation to the basement wall. Additional cost-effective energy savings can be made by increasing attic insulation and further draft-proofing. Adding basement insulation in this case could have a major impact on the type, sizing and costs for any new mechanical system equipment.

Our services include:

- Providing or reviewing an energy analysis of your home to ensure that long-term issues of insulation and draft proofing are being addressed.

- Discussing your energy saving and energy conservation objectives (e.g. cost reduction, return on investment, energy security, going green), as well as your investment timeframe.

- Working with you to select the right type of equipment, including comparing options with respect to energy savings.

- Preparing a bid document and working with you to solicit and select bids from qualified product vendors. (Based on these bids we can estimate the financial returns for your investment if requested.)

- Answering questions from product vendors and installers.

Bfreehomes acts as a consultant only and does not sell or install products. We make recommendations for your consideration and final decision.
