About Us

Ms. Shawna Henderson, CEO of Bfreehomes, has been working in the field of energy-efficiency and housing since 1992. Her experience with the R-2000 and EnerGuide for Houses (ecoENERGY) programs, coupled with research carried out for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and Natural Resources Canada, provides the backbone of Bfreehomes consulting services. Shawna has worked successfully with eight to fifteen home design clients each year since 1992, on such widely varied projects as load-bearing straw bale homes, double-wall new construction, standard stick framing and gut rehabs of older houses. She has designed solar thermal, PV and wind systems for several clients, working with vendors and installers to complete the finer operating details. Shawna has the ability to bring cutting-edge industry knowledge from research projects to builders and homeowners in an understandable and informed manner.

Ms. Henderson is also a published author of books related to sustainable housing including Deep Energy Retrofits for Cool Climate Houses, The Cool Climate Solar Home Design Manual, The Canadian Solar Home Design Manual, Solar Nova Scotia.

Dr. Hal Richman, COO of Bfreehomes Design Ltd., conducts rigorous financial analysis of energy savings measures, leads stakeholder and focus groups for consumers and builders and provides project management services in research projects for organizations like NRCan and CMHC. He also conducts heat-loss gain calculations, specifies alternative-renewable technologies and formulates Deep Energy Retrofit Roadmaps for consumers. Dr. Richman’s role in Bfreehomes research initiatives leverages his twenty years’ experience as a management consultant in conducting focus groups, financial analysis, project formulation, project management and quality assurance.
